Calculation or source basis

CEPS 0.27 kg; JRC 0.30–0.35 kg; one explicitly non-representative teardown yielded 0.160 kg.

Limitations of the figure

JRC notes that older factors may overstate modern designs. The range is not a current market average.

Original application & recovery

Where magnets are located in e-bikes and pedelecs

Its position within the device helps with identification, but does not in itself establish the alloy, weight or eligibility for purchase.

Location within the equipment

In the rotor of a hub or mid-drive motor. In a hub motor, the permanent magnets are arranged in a ring on the rotating housing around the stator.

System boundary

NdFeB per drive as a literature reference. Foreign parts, housings, shafts, back irons, supports and other device components are not automatically included in the magnet mass.

Record before submitting an enquiry

  • Document the motor manufacturer, model and year
  • Assess hub and mid-drive motors separately
  • Clearly separate the 0.160 kg individual case from the 0.27–0.35 kg factors
