Practical magnet guide · Drives and automation

Sell magnets from electric and servo motors to ES Metall

Electric and servo motors may use NdFeB, SmCo, ferrite or other designs. The motor name alone is not a material analysis.

Electric & servo motors: classifying the material and its origin

A good enquiry distinguishes between the complete machine, rotor, dismantled segments and loose magnets, and describes all remaining components.

01

Motor design

State the manufacturer, model, model year, nameplate details and bill of materials, where available.

02

Dismantling status

Clearly distinguish between a complete motor, rotor, bonded segments and loose magnets.

03

Process fluids

Document oils, coolants, potting compounds, insulation materials and other components.

04

Safety

Account for strong magnetic forces, residual energy and mechanical stresses before any dismantling.

Important limitation

Do not make a blanket claim that EV or servo motors have specific HREE content or premium value.

For material assessment

Information required for electric & servo motors

  • 01Nameplate and datasheet
  • 02Bill of materials or magnet specification
  • 03Photographs showing the condition
  • 04Origin and decommissioning status

Enquiry in four steps

Confirm the required photographs, quantity and origin, and agree the handover arrangements

  1. 01

    Enquiry

Record the material, form, condition, quantity and unit, country where the material is located and supporting documents.

  2. 02

    Initial assessment

Cross-check the stated material identity, batch, origin, parties, status and general processing route.

  3. 03

    Assessment plan

If required, agree the sample, method, costs, packaging and handover arrangements.

  4. 04

    Commercial terms

Only once a reliable basis has been established should the commercial terms, responsibilities and payment basis be documented.

Frequently asked questions

Electric & servo motors: brief answers

Are complete motors eligible for purchase?

You can include complete motors in a project enquiry. Whether suitable arrangements can be made for acceptance or dismantling depends on the material, its condition and its legal status.

Are rotor segments always NdFeB?

No. Manufacturer data or suitable analysis is required.

Can I remove bonded magnets?

Not without an agreed procedure. Mechanical, thermal and chemical methods may create risks and additional waste.
